Design, charging and comfort
The SoundPEATS TrueCapsule is a pair of truly wireless earphones with an Apple AirPods-like design. Well, that means they have a stem of around three centimeters attached to the earpieces - but the inside in your ear is different. Rather than Apple's half in-ear buds, the TrueCapsule is completely in-ear, with the well-known rubber tips filling your ear canal.
While some competitors with the same approach are too big to feel relaxed, the TrueCapsule is very comfortable. The stems can also easily be worn flat against your cheeks.
The earpieces look quite alright, the charging case looks a bit cheap, however, with a slight rambling sound when you lift its lid. The charging specs are neither bad or good in its price category, with 3 hours listening time on a full charge of the earpieces, and 4 full recharges of the earpieces from the case. The battery level can be seen on the case via four LED lights - neat.
Connectivity and controls
You control the earpieces of the SoundPEATS TrueCapsule via touch controls. Press twice to play and pause the buds, hold the right bud 1,5 seconds to skip a song, do it on the left one to return a number. Activating your voice assistant can be done with two presses on the left earpiece. Unfortunately, it's not possible to change the volume on them.
That's the controls on paper. In reality, you have to know where the sweet spot of the controls is. To save you a lot of frustration: it's all away up high on the earpieces, where the stem starts on the earpiece. It's the only place where you'll be able to control the earpieces.
Connectivity on the SoundPEATS TrueCapsule is genuine good. The Bluetooth 5.0 connection is stable up to ten meters and holds fair in areas full of wireless signals too.
Calling and watching movies on TrueCapsule
The brilliant thing about truly wireless earphones with a stem is the placement of the microphone. It's three or so centimeter closer to your mouth than on bean-shaped headsets. It shows for the calling quality on the SoundPEATS TrueCapsule, which is very acceptable. Especially when you're calling indoor, the other end of the line will hear you clear and stable. It's absolutely possible to make a more extended phone call on the TrueCapsule.
Watching videos on these SoundPEATS fares okay on Android, but does have a synchronization problem on the YouTube app on iPhone, where lips rarely sync. The audio delay is minimal on services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, but in these apps too, the audio and video don't always combine well.
Still: the SoundPEATS TrueCapsule offers excellent call quality, and having just one of these two features already, is great to have in this price class.
Sound quality of TrueCapsule: Warm
The SoundPEATS TrueCapsule has a full-bodied sound, with emphasis on the bass and lower mids. Darker tones such as bass guitars, bass drums, and specific piano strokes, sound ahead and give the music a warm and full feeling. The bass has a pleasant light thump and is not tiresome, not too pushy. It has a laidback vibe.
The mids and upper mids, such as male and female vocals and guitars, sound reasonably natural. They aren't pushed forward, but neither do they sound recessed. The TrueCapsule delivers an average soundstage, with the music spreading nicely, coming in up close and further away from you. It's easy to separate the instruments in the musical pieces too.
However: don't expect the impressive instrument placement found on somewhat more expensive models such as the Mpow T5 or Tranya T3, or the best in class ultra-budget earphones like the QCY QS2 and the Anomoibuds Capsule.
However, if you're looking for a good cheap Apple AirPods alternative, the musical qualities of the SoundPEATS TrueCapsule may surprise you with its full-bodied and somewhat airy sound.
Verdict
If you're looking for a cheap Apple AirPods competitor that isn't a straight knock-off, the SoundPEATS TrueCapsule is right up your alley. It's easy to use once you get the hang of the controls, sounds full, and offers excellent call quality.
