TWS true wireless earphones - under $25 - $50

TWS review Soundliberty 79 Whizzer OT1 Airaux.jpg

It's time for another test and review of true wireless earphones that are popular on Amazon and AliExpress. Here you will find a compact review on the TaoTronics TT-BH079, Whizzer OT1 and Blitzwolf Airaux AA-UM1.

Most of the time, I write extensive reviews and comparisons on wireless earbuds. Some wireless earphones don't get their own review, however. Either because a model is older, or that's is simply not recommendable enough over the fierce competition. It doesn't mean the earphones in a review round-up are bad!

Why I wrote a mini-review on the Whizzer OT1, TaoTronics SoundLiberty 79 and Blitzwolf Airaux AA-UM1? Partly because they gain lots of attention on either Amazon or AliExpress - and you may want an answer to how these compare to other models. And partly because I just want to review these models, after having compared already over 92 models. :-)

Here we go: three new compact reviews on popular TWS true wireless earbuds.

TaoTronics SoundLiberty 79 review: Smooth operator

With so many affordable true wireless earphones, every manufacturer has to think of an advantage over its many competitors. On the TaoTronics SoundLiberty 79, that edge is the small rubber ear-wings on top of the earpieces.

They go behind your ear flaps and help to keep the earpieces in your ear, which is suitable for working out or sports. The earpieces itself are tear-shaped and stay comfortable in your ears - even though they are a bit big.

Another nice-to-have on the TaoTronics SoundLiberty 79 (or TT-BH079), is the option to change the volume on the earpieces instantly. You need just one tap on the right bud to increase the volume, and one on the left bud to decrease it again. With two touches, you play or pause the music - and with three, you skip or return a track. It works well.

The battery part of this TaoTronics is also substantial - with around 7 hours of playtime per charge, and a USB-C powered charger that can recharge the earpieces up to three times fully. Calling? Outside, your voice is reduced too heavily, but an indoor phone call is perfectly possible. Video playback? Perfect, even on the YouTube-app on iPhone. It may seem we have a real winner.

Soundwise, the SoundLiberty 79 offers a solid bass, with a nice and steady thump, that sounds enjoyably deep in songs demanding a lot of basses. For the rest, these wireless earbuds sound foremost smooth.

Vocals and both darker and bright sounding instruments all play a decent role in music - the one doesn't overpower the other. Highs are toned-down heavily, preventing the music from sounding harsh or bright anytime. Unfortunately, this smooth character also gives the TT-BH079 a bit of a closed-in feeling. Vocals don't give you the same, intimate sensation as they can on competitors like the Fiil T1X, Bomaker Sifi or Alien Secret QCC010. Those do sound better, also in soundstage, tonality, and level of detail. On the plus side, the SoundLiberty 79 doesn't beg for your attention all the time.

This TaoTronics’ smooth sound character can be a welcome outcome when you want to use earphones an entire working day - which you can, with the excellent battery and comfort of this SoundLiberty 79.

Comfort, build and battery life: 4/5
Controls and connectivity: 4/5
Calling and watching movies: 4/5
Sound quality: 4/5

Whizzer OT1 review: Original design, good sound

Whether you want the Whizzer OT1 or not, will probably depend on the look of the earpieces mostly. They are something special - designed like rough-edged diamonds that follow the shape of your ears.

On it, you will find countless tiny star-like spots, and the texts 'Opera Factory' and 'On the road'. Like the design? It's still good to know that they take on and pass through a lot of wind noise when you're walking or cycling with them. Calling doesn't come recommended because of the same reason - the earpieces pick up too much noise. You can make the earpieces comfortable to you with the delivered five sets of ear tips.

You control the earpieces by touch controls, which are a bit oversensitive - making it almost too easy to play/ pause the music (single) or skip or return a track (multiple taps). A long touch activates the voice assistant - it's not possible to change the volume.

The battery life of the Whizzer OT1 is decent, with around 5 hours of playtime and around three full recharges from the case before it needs a recharge itself. Unfortunately, the LED-strip inside the case makes it hard to read how much battery is left. Watching videos works flawlessly with the OT1.

When it comes to listening to music, the Whizzer OT1 offers a slightly dark, yet pleasantly warm sound. The bass is capable of a steady thump in dance songs but doesn't overpower the rest of the music in more easier-going tracks. Lower-mids, such as darker electronic tones and drums, are nicely present, and vocals take a prominent, yet well-controlled, role in the music. Compared to the best competitors, such as the Bomaker Sifi, Mpow M5, and Alien Secret QCC010, the Whizzer sounds a little less detailed and more hollow. It can also distort a bit on the highest volumes. Yet, overall, the sound is well-rounded, with smooth vocals and nice lows — a solid deal for a reasonable price.

Comfort, build and battery life: 3/5
Controls and connectivity: 3/5
Calling and watching movies: 4/5
Sound quality: 4/5

Blitzwolf Airaux AA-UM1 review: If sports are most important

It's disappointing how few wireless earbuds under $25 are suitable for sports and working out. At least Blitzwolf is here to attempt.

Blitzwolf Airaux AA-UM1 review.jpg

The Airaux AA-UM1 TWS is IPX6 waterproof and should be able to resist rain, water, and sweating. It comes with two sizes of rubber ear-wings you can pull over the earpieces, to make them stay tight in your ears. Twist the buds in your ears a bit, and they should remain there during your sporting.

The buds don't have the most extended battery. They only last around 3,5 hours on a single charge, and the charging case seems to lose its battery life faster than average, meaning your earpieces will be empty more often than you like. The earpieces control by touch, with which you can play/ pause the music, activate the voice assistant, or skip/ return a track. It isn't possible to change the volume, unfortunately. The touch controls don't work too well either - they're slow to respond.

The worst thing about the Blitzwolf Airaux AA-UM1 is that it doesn't sound so good. Music sounds plain muffled. Vocals lack clarity, brighter-sounding instruments such as violins, cymbals, and guitars are barely noticeable, and all that remains is bass. It's not very detailed, it doesn't offer the best separation, but at least, it pumps nicely.

The bass makes the Blitzwolf Airaux AA-UM1 just suitable enough for sports. If sports isn't your primary goal, however, there are tons of better alternatives.

Calling and watching movies: 4/5
Sound quality: 2/5
